Welcome

Dear visitors,

On behalf of the College Novel Committee, 2008-2009, I would like to welcome you all to this blog: http://jhumpalahiri.blogspot.com/ created for discussions related to the two works chosen for this year; namely Jhumpa Lahiri's short story collection "Interpreter of Maladies" and novel "the Namesake."

Professors and students who are interested and using these two books in their classes are strongly urged to use this site to converse on any topic related to these works.

Hope this starts some lively discussion.

Hi Prof. Mitra this is Michael Peldunas from your 3:45 class. I just want to say that the "Real Darwin" was a excelent chapter but sad at the end. I really thought that it was not Boori Ma's fault for the stolen sinks. I also thought that the other character's were being harsh on Boori Ma, i just thought that they could solve that problem a little differently.

I found "A Real Durwan" very interesting after you explained the "Calcutta after Partition". I don't think Boori Ma knew anything about the robbery since that was the only place she had to lay her head. Why would she jeopardize that? She didn't have family or friends and Mrs. Dalal looked after her. It was sad when they kicked her out since she was old and didn’t have anywhere to go.

I find jumphas writing to be very depressing. I have only read the a few short stories of hers however she rarely shows the positive aspects of the main charaters life. For example a real durwan she is always making boorie ma seem worthless. Even tho she writes negative it does not take away from her talent. I am eager to read the namesake because I have caught pieces of the movie but from by understanding the book is better. By Jordan Santiago
